Leaving Cert Cycle

Guide to Leaving Cert Subject Choice

Every year students face the critical task of selecting their subjects for the Leaving Cert.  Before embarking on the Leaving Cert cycle students should take the time to consider their future educational goals as the decisions they make can have consequences for college applications.

Factors to consider When Choosing Your Leaving Cert Subjects

Third Language.

Having a foreign language as this is a requirement for matriculation for the vast majority of courses in NUI colleges.

Science Subjects

Choosing a subject in the field of science provides a student with alot of options.  A lot of courses require a science subject especially in the areas of medicine, engineering and science.  Be aware that some medical courses require two science subjects

Practical Subjects

Choosing a practical or creative subject is also a good option for students.  The practical subjects have project work that accounts for a substantial percentage of the overall marks.  This can ease the burden on students and allow them to manage their study time.

Final Tips

It is a good idea to choose subjects that you are good at and that you have an interest in.  Do your research and talk to your teachers about the subjects you are considering.  Many subjects are very different their Junior Cert equivalent so make sure the subject is what you imagined it to be. Talk to students who are currently in Fifth and Sixth Year about the subjects they are taking to get an idea of the topics covered and the workload involved.  At senior cycle we offer the following:
